IB Middle Years Program

The Middle Years Programme (MYP) is a challenging framework that encourages students to make practical connections between their studies and the real world. The MYP curriculum framework comprises eight subject groups, providing a broad and balanced education for early adolescents.

The MYP Curriculum

The MYP curriculum contains eight subject groups. Students must participate in the 8 subject groups each year of the program. The subjects include:

  • Language and Literature (Language Arts)
  • Language Acquisition (Spanish)
  • Individuals and Societies (History)
  • Mathematics
  • Sciences
  • Design (semester course)
  • Physical and Health Education (semester course)
  • Arts (Visual/Performing)

MYP Key Elements

Approaches to Learning

IB Approaches to Learning are a set of strategies and skill that students develop to help them become more independent learners. They prepared them to be successful in more rigorous future academic programs such as the IB Diploma Programme (11-12 grades)

Approaches to Teaching

  • Inquiry-based—provoking curiosity in order to structure and sustain exploration
  • Concept-driven—planning and teaching through concepts that are transferable to new contexts
  • Contextualized—reaching beyond the scope of individual subjects to establish relevance
  • Collaborative—promoting effective teamwork and purposeful/productive collaboration
  • Differentiated—providing access to learning for a diversity of learners
  • Informed by assessment—balancing assessment of, and for, learning

Global Contexts

MYP global contexts provide shared starting points for inquiry into what it means to be internationally—minded, framing a curriculum that promotes multilingualism, intercultural understanding and global engagement.

Service as Action

All students are encouraged to participate in community service activities to develop the Learner Profile attributes, embody the IB and College Park Middle School mission statements and to be of service to others. Students in the third year of the program participate in a demonstration of their learning via the Community Project where they explore and respond to a problem in their community.

The IB Learner Profile

The IB Learner Profile expresses the IB Mission statement in action. We aim to develop these 10 attributes in students. These attributes are a common language that expresses the values held by all IB World Schools.

The IB Learner Profile is an embodiment of what it means to be internationally minded.
