OCPS Parent Survey Spring 2020

Parents, we remind students each day to “Be Safe, Be Respectful and Be Responsible.”  We ask that you assist us in reinforcing these three key areas of our Positive Behavior Support system at College Park Middle School.  Several reward trips and celebrations are planned and students with referrals or discipline infractions will not be allowed to participate.

Report cards went home on Wednesday, January 22, 2020.  If your child is failing a core subject class for the first semester, a progress letter was attached with an opportunity for your child to recover the class through our recovery program Edgenuity.  Students failing a core (ELA, Math, Social Studies, and Science) subject are in jeopardy of being retained in their current grade.  Please pay special attention to your students’ progress and contact the grade level counselor for questions.

After school tutoring began during the month of October and continues every Tuesday and Thursday.  Please contact our main offices to ensure you child is signed up for tutoring and attending each session.  Some of you may have received a separate message encouraging you to send your child to tutoring, if you received such a phone call it is critical your child attend tutoring sessions to ensure they are successful on their end of year exams and their core subjects.

Literacy Night is this Wednesday, January 29, 2020!  The event will start at 5:30 p.m. and conclude at 7:30 p.m.  Come out and enjoy some food, fun and literacy resource information.  Pizza and childcare will be provided.  Please register on the College Park Middle School Facebook and Twitter page.

Parents, we are one to one school which means every child receives a laptop computer to use for educational purposes.  While away from school the responsibility falls to you to monitor the use of the computer at home.  Please ensure your child does not visit inappropriate sites.  Parents/Guardian information regarding monitoring will be included in the email that follows this message.

Parents, we have had an uptick in the number of parents bringing fast food and other outside foods to children on campus.  Each child on campus receives breakfast and lunch at no cost.  If you intend to forego school provided meals and wish to drop off food, you can only do so during your child’s lunch period.  Additionally, parents are only permitted to bring food for their child/children.  Packed lunches are always welcomed but we do try to limit disruptions to the normal functions of the school during the day.

Please see the excerpt from the Family Technology Handbook found at the following OCPS website in the email that follows this message:

Parents/Guardians are important partners in the LaunchED Digital Learning Program. Parents/Guardians are responsible for:

  • carefully reading the LaunchED Family Technology Handbook.
  • explaining the handbook.
  • reading and signing the Parent Technology Media Information Consent Form annually.
  • helping to ensure the digital device is kept safe and secure at all times to avoid breakage, damage, loss, and theft.
  • ensuring that the digital device is used for digital learning purposes only outside of school.
  • checking the digital device frequently for damage and reporting any issues to the appropriate school personnel.
  • carefully monitoring daily use of the Internet at home.
  • reporting any loss of, or damage to, the digital device within 72 hours.
  • providing the school with a copy of the police report listing OCPS as the property owner in the event of theft.
  • returning the digital device to the school at the end of the school year, during inventory periods, when damaged, upon withdrawal, and/or in instances where the student is suspended/expelled for any reason.

VERY IMPORTANTSTUDENTS MUST LOG ON TO THE DISTRICT NETWORK BETWEEN JANUARY 6 - 31.  THIS ACTION WILL ENSURE THE DEVICE IS ACTIVE AND INVENTORIED.  It is imperative for all devices to be connected to the network during the inventory period of January 6-31.

Please remind students to bring their laptop to school every day.

I also encourage you to check the Skyward grade portal to ensure your child is up to date with all assignments.  Feel free to reach out to your child's teacher via email or phone to inquire about missing assignments and opportunities to improve class grades.

We have noticed a uptick in the number of students arriving to their classes tardy during the school day.  To avoid consequences, please encourage your child to transition to their next class immediately when class ends.  Chronically tardy students are missing out on core content and late arrivals disrupts the learning environment.  Please reinforce the need for your student to focus on being responsible by getting to class on time and turning in assignments on time.

Please remind your student of our policies regarding dress code, cell phones, sunglasses, pajamas or other inappropriate items for school.  Cell phones are permitted on campus but are to be turned off and put away at all times throughout the school day.  Parents, please refrain from texting or calling your child during the day and route all messages through the front office.  Confiscated phones can be retrieved by a parent or legal guardian.  Additionally, I appreciate all parents who continue to check their students’ dress code prior to their arrival on campus.  We do not permit hoodies, sagging pants, midriffs showing, slides, head coverings (unless for religious purposes), or ripped jeans that are revealing above the finger tips or that cause a distraction.  Inappropriate items (ex. Slides, hoodies) will be confiscated.

All voice messages are accompanied by an identical email to all addresses on file.  Additional important information is included in the email to follow this message.

If ever in need of additional information, please call our main offices at 407-245-1800.  We are happy to answer any questions you may have or clarify information for you.

Thank you for supporting College Park Middle School and thank you for the job you do each day with your child.  Together we will educate, accelerate and lead children to success.  Have a wonderful Sunday evening and remember, At College Park Middle School, you are loved and there is nothing you can do about it!
